What do a jail, the British "music" invasion, and NBA have in common? WTVP's ILLINOIS ADVENTURE launched its 13th season with a trip to Benton to visit the old Franklin County Jail, which has been turned into a museum. Here, the gangster Charlie Birger-the last man to be legally hung in Illinois-was jailed before his execution. Also in this area, the first Beatles record was played on U.S. airways-and former Chicago Bulls Coach Doug Collins lived at the jail while his father was sheriff. The program also looked at a vintage car collection in Aurora, visited Weldon Springs Park, and took viewers to the Reagan Peace Garden at Eureka College. |
